Miss Africa Tri State – Joyce Oppongwah visits and helps at Sierra House in New Jersey
Miss Africa Tri State 2012; Joyce Oppongwah started her reign on Thursday July 19th, 2012 at her immediate neighborhood of New Jersey, by visiting Sierra House in East Orange.
Sierra House is a home set up for improving the prospects for individual achievement for at-risk youth and young adults. Many of them are single mothers, runaways, homeless and those just out of the foster care system to help them live independently within the community at large.
While mothers are attending a Sierra House training to build essential life skills or workforce development training, volunteers are needed to watch over the children. Arts & crafts, reading stories, homework help, playing games, these are just a few of the fun possibilities volunteers can engage in with the children.
MATS Joyce was so impressed by the activities, the beautiful home, and the overall mission of the center that she decided to go back on Thursday, July 26th 2012 this time not only to visit but to help babysit while the mothers do other activities to make them productive to themselves and the society.
It was as natural to her that she wants to be volunteering her time every day with the house – being a nursing major that hopes to work in a specialized kids hospital or center after graduation, her love for kids are immeasurable.
We wish her success as she continues to pursue her platform of caring for children most especially the less privileged ones both here in the USA, Africa, and all around the world.
